Varicose and Thread Veins

A large percentage of our female population and a growing number of men suffer from vein problems. The two most common and of greatest concern are varicose veins and telangiectasias or spider veins. Spider veins are the small, thin, web-like surface veins, which develop mainly on the face and legs. The larger varicose veins are the bulging veins, which commonly occur on the legs.

What causes varicose & thread veins?
There are many causes of varicose and thread veins including family history, pregnancy, prolonged standing, obesity and the use of HRT. When one or more of the valves ceases to function properly this leads to back pressure on the superficial veins causing them to dilate and bulge.

How can varicose & thread veins be treated?
Depending on how severe the veins are, there are a number of treatments available. Large varicose veins may need to be surgically removed. However, "Foam" Injections have radically reduced the need for surgery in many cases and Vasculite is one of very few clinics in Great Britain to offer this procedure. For more information on this State of the Art treatment please visit our Foam Injection page.

Micro sclerotherapy is used to treat less severe varicose veins. The treatment involves the injection of an appropriate solution into the varicose or thread veins using a very fine needle. The solution damages the wall of the abnormal veins which are then slowly absorbed and disappear.

Thread veins, particularly those on the face can also be effectively treated with the Photoderm machine. This innovative machine emits a very strong, brief flash of non-coherent light which is absorbed as heat energy by the small blood vessels which are then destroyed.
